The panel discussion was well attended and very interactive. Healthy sharing of experiences on, best practices and knowledge on how to navigate the terrain of getting good caregivers for loved ones, accessing funds to pay for Elder care, medication and medical services, and how to identify abuse in its many forms. Here is a short list of issues that need further analysis:
Financial / Banking
- Clear rules on how family caregivers are to conduct business on behalf of the Elder e.g. what documents do they need to access the Elder’s funds, etc.
- Is there “Know your Seniors Policy”to safeguard our elders from financial fraud?
- A “chain of command” should be established on the accounts of Senior Citizens at financial institutions.
- Rules to be followed by only child vs if there are several siblings
Policing
- Community police should take the lead when treating with Elder abuse
- Could the Police Service publish a list of Homes with violations or some ranking of Homes?
- Nursing Home Owners should be given a list of what to report and to whom.
Services Needed
- What is abuse and what does it look like
- Financial assistance with medication for Elders (CDAP)
- Financial assistance with medical services for Elders (Clinics, Emergency room, etc.)
- Care assistance (at home or otherwise) for family members who stay at home to care for elders, stipends, subsidies, etc.
- What is there and how is it accessed?
Here’s an Instagram reel we posted that features a few highlights from the discussion.
