A Day of History, Reflection, and Fellowship at Sanderson Heritage Park

On Thursday 18th June 2026, our clients enjoyed a memorable field trip to Sanderson Heritage Park in Fyzabad, where they experienced not only the beauty of the surroundings but also an important part of Trinidad and Tobago’s history.

Our day began with a warm welcome from Mr. Akbar Sanderson, who met us at Charlie King Junction and guided us on a fascinating tour of the area. Along the way, he shared the historical significance of Charlie King Junction and its connection to Labour Day, as well as the life and legacy of Uriah “Buzz” Butler, widely recognised as the father of the trade union movement in Trinidad and Tobago.

Clients listened with great interest as Mr. Sanderson recounted the events surrounding the 1937 Butler Oilfield Riots, which brought national attention to the harsh working conditions, low wages, and inequality faced by many workers at the time. His storytelling also included the intriguing history behind Charlie King, adding another layer of local heritage to the day’s experience.

For many of our clients, the visit sparked memories of an important chapter in our nation’s past. Some recalled hearing stories from family members, while others reflected on their own memories of that era. It became a meaningful opportunity to learn, share experiences, and appreciate the progress that has been made over the years.

The group also visited the Uriah Butler Memorial and paid their respects at his gravesite before continuing to Sanderson Heritage Park. Surrounded by peaceful scenery, everyone enjoyed a leisurely tour of the grounds before gathering for lunch on the deck overlooking the pond.

Although we chose not to participate in some of the park’s adventure activities, including horseback riding, kayaking, and dirt biking, the relaxed atmosphere provided the perfect setting for conversation, laughter, and fellowship.

Field trips like these offer more than a change of scenery. They encourage lifelong learning, strengthen friendships, and create opportunities to connect with the people, places, and stories that have shaped our country.
